Stage 18 – L’Aquila to Santa Stefano Sessanso

54 km

Day started out with a bit of difficulty as we weren’t at the start of our track so had to navigate on our own towards the track! Of course a step climb up on the track. Finally on the track and off we went. Missed our turnoff and ended up on a busy highway. Managed to find a side dirt road that connected us back onto the track.

And then the wahoo dinged climb started – 37 km. Wasn’t too bad to start but started getting high gradient and hot. My chain felt grimy and the bike was making squeaks. Bag felt heavy and I’m in my last gear. Negative thoughts enter your mind but somehow you try to focus on the positive. Finally saw a bar to have a break. Last place to stop for 30 km. Welcome relief to fuel up with biscuits and water. And off we go – I’m in a better mindset. Always in lowest gear but doing okay. After meadows suddenly you arrive on the plateau and it’s 350 degree view with stunning views of the appennine mountains. Worth the climb!

We then had to make a decision – do an extra 10 km up and down to campo. We chose no – still lots of cycling ahead and we still have beautiful views.

Our descent started but unfortunately wind in our face. Still good. A few small climbs and then a great descent into Santa stefano. Such a stunning view to see this medieval hilltop village.

Our home for the next two nights.

They’ve restored the rooms to what they were like in the 14 century. It’s like being in a cave. Mattress made out of sheep’s wool and candles in the room. I did feel a bit caustophonic at first.

We had a great meal although too much food – 6 course tasting menu.
