When you are younger you wouldn’t think much about embarking on a bike packing trip without too much training. Not so much as you age! Peter and I have made several smart moves to ensure we are cycling fit when we started doing long bike packing trips! First investment – a wahoo smart trainer with the Zwift app! You are able to take off your back wheel and put your bike on the trainer and it gives you the feeling your cycling on the road! The Zwift app provides workouts and social rides with other Zwifters around the world! Believe me you can work up quite the sweat! The smart trainers have been a game changer for people living in cold climates to enable them to have cycle fitness come the spring. The other smart move we did in getting ready is strength training! Thomas and Jon at JK conditioning have developed programs for us that are targeted for cyclists. Peter will tell you that since doing JK’s program he hasn’t had any nagging injuries from running. Lastly we both have done cross training – cross country skiing, running (Peter more than me) and swimming (none for Peter).
Hopefully our training will pay off as we embark on this adventure! I am slightly nervous as there will be lots of daily km’s and LOTS of climbing! One thing I know is that I will do it! It’s such a great feeling when you accomplish something outside your comfort zone!
